The Regional-University Program
At each site, the selected undergraduates are trained in issues relevant
to the Latino community by participating in local activities, research and
writing. At the end of the academic year, LLOP students are expected to possess
the skills in making a positive difference in the Latino community, both
locally and nationally.
LLOP graduates have gone on to pursue advanced degrees and have a heightened
awareness of Latino issues. The program includes:
- Close contact with a local IUP-affiliated university research center.
- Specialized training in policy research and writing.
- Academic credit for a semester for participating in the program.
- Research on issues pertinent to Latinos, such as: education, media, language,
ethnic relations, immigration, gender issues, and local government, as well as
cultural events which focus on the local Latino community.
- Exposure to national concerns through the Summer Policy Training Institute.
The discussion at a national level exposes participants to the diversity and
complexity of Latino communities and allows the opportunity to forge close
ties to student peers across the country.
