THE POSITION:
The Library Technician is the experienced level class of this series, fully competent to perform a wide range of circulation, public contact and library service support duties using and online library system; and is distinguished from the Senior Library Technician in that the latter performs technical library support services in a specialized area. Incumbents exercise some independence of judgment in the application of library policies and performance of patron services and are expected to handle some technical reference or advisory service questions.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: A typical way to obtain the above knowledge and skill is a combination of education and experience equivalent to:
Graduation from high school or GED and one year of library or comparable experience.
Two years’ of college education preferred.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: The physical abilities involved in the performance of essential duties are:
Climbing, reaching, stooping and kneeling to shelve books and locate materials; lifting and carrying up to 35 pounds; manual dexterity to operate keyboards and other library equipment; speech and hearing to communicate with library patrons; vision sufficient to read computer screens and fine text. This work is performed indoors in a library environment.

HOURS:
During each semester(Spring and Summer ): Monday – Thursday 11:00 AM – 8:00 PM and Friday 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM;
Non-semester hours (summer and winter intersession) Monday – Thursday (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM) and Friday (7:00 AM – 3:30 PM).

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The Digital Conversion Production Manager works in a team environment for creating and deploying online collections, and oversees the Digital Conversion Unit (DCU) within the Digital Library Production Service (DLPS). The DCU is responsible for digital conversion of library collections, working with monograph, serial, newspaper, photograph, and manuscript collections. The DCU converts on average 5,000 volumes per year, and is committed to high-volume, efficient digitization. The DCU also works closely with the Scholarly Publishing Office (SPO) on digitizing materials to be published by SPO, and the DCU staff work closely with library selectors, archivists and special collections librarians in developing cost estimates for digitization projects.

The Digital Library Production Service (DLPS), a part of the University of Michigan University Library, is UM’s key organization for creation, deployment and support of local digital library collections. DLPS, with over 20 FTE, including librarians, computing professionals, and support staff, provides production-level support for digital library collections in a number of subject areas and formats. Online collection resources include significant image-and text-based journal collections, art image collections, and a leading edge XML development effort. Staff members within DLPS assume responsibility for access mechanisms, data loading, security, accounting and billing mechanisms, as well as creation and conversion activities. DLPS provides these services to the University of Michigan as well as other institutions, and works with consortia such as the Digital Library Federation (DLF) and the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) to advance the development of sound digital libraries.

Under the supervision of the Head of DLPS, the Digital Conversion Production Manager supervises a unit of 6 professionals, and part-time workers and student assistants, including technicians for digital capture and conversion of textual materials and continuous tone images. The incumbent is responsible for coordinating departmental priorities and long-range unit planning with the Head of the Digital Library Production Service.

The Digital Conversion Production Manager develops and maintains a productive and cost effective processing operation which is responsive to the needs of other library units and library users. Establishes and analyzes statistical measurements of productivity. Plans and oversees development of new production formats and workflows based on emerging Library priorities. Plans and implements effective quality control methods for ensuring accurate and reliable digital conversion. As part of the library’s partnership with Google to digitize the library’s collections, the incumbent performs analysis of specifications, and manages the digitization of materials not digitized by Google.

The DCU constantly strives to provide the most efficient, cost-effective and highest quality methods of digitization of library collections. The DCU works with units throughout the library system to digitize library collections, including rare and valuable materials, such as papyri, maps and rare books, as well as damaged library materials. The DCU monitors its quality control processes to reduce errors and provide high quality digital objects for the library’s large online collections.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Applies creative thinking, experience, technical expertise, and knowledge of the information needs of users to the provision of access to electronic resources. Participates in the ongoing design and development of library-wide systems, workflows, and policies for managing electronic resources. Collaborates with the Electronic Resources Officer to coordinate the selection and processing of electronic resources. Participates in the implementation of an Electronic Resource Management system.

Monitors trends in emerging technologies, copyright, and licensing. Keeps current with developments in electronic products and services, including the use of open source software to manage electronic resources.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required: ALA accredited Masters Degree in Library or Information Science; three to five (3-5) years of experience in a large academic library; ability to work collaboratively in a complex, culturally diverse organizational setting; excellent oral and written communication skills; demonstrated analytical skills; knowledge of and/or experience in the management of electronic resources; knowledge of electronic services and Web environments; knowledge of contemporary practices, issues, and trends for managing electronic resources.

Desired: Experience working with federated search tools, open URL access, link resolvers, Electronic Resource Management systems, e-cataloging standards, non-MARC metadata, vendor supplied bibliographic records. Conversant with basic techniques for local digitization and management of information resources, including the methods for maintaining an institutional repository.

The Special Collections Research Center of The George Washington University invites applications for a librarian position to direct the Public Services and Outreach operations for the Special Collections Research Center in the Gelman Library System. The Special Collections Research Center actively collects materials in American History, with emphases on African-Americana, American Labor History, and Washingtoniana; Literary Studies; Judaica and Hebraica; Broadcast Media and Journalism; and the history of The George Washington University and the surrounding Foggy Bottom neighborhood. Its collections include organizational records, personal papers, rare books, diaries, scrapbooks, photographs, association records, cartographic materials, cartoons, handbills and posters. The Special Collections Research Center presents lectures, special events, book signings and exhibits, and maintains exhibit cases.

The Public Services and Outreach Librarian will be responsible for educational outreach to the professors, graduate students, and undergraduates who do or may potentially use Special Collections materials. This outreach will take the form of direct contact with faculty whose research interests overlap with the holdings of the Special Collections Research Center, as well as the use of blogs, Wikis, and other technologies and innovative approaches. The Librarian will also collaborate with colleagues from the Gelman Library's main Reference and Instruction units to coordinate instruction on the use of Special Collections materials and occasionally assist the Exhibit Developer with on-site and web-based exhibits.

The Librarian will be responsible for managing the day-to-day public services operations and, in consultation with the Director of the Special Collections Research Center, the development and implementation of policies and procedures to manage reference services, reprographic services, supervision of the reading room, and supervision of holdings maintenance activities including processing books and periodicals and stacks maintenance. The Librarian is responsible for hiring, training and scheduling student support staff to assist in these activities, maintaining a portion of the departmental budget for support staff, as well as processing all the appropriate personnel-related paper-work. The Librarian will be responsible for other duties including but not limited to serving as lead person for technical matters relating to circulation of materials, handling course reserves, serving as liaison to inter-library services, administering policies governing use, reproduction, and preservation of materials. This position reports to the Director of the Special Collections Research Center.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:Appropriate academic background (MLS from an ALA-accredited library school and/or advanced degree in a Humanities, Social Science or related subject area). Coursework or training in archival management and/or a demonstrated understanding of research use of archives and manuscripts. Relevant job experience at an archive or special collections department. Supervisory experience.

ADDITIONAL SELECTION CRITERIA: Thorough knowledge of archival public services and outreach practices and initiatives; strong communication, organizational and project management skills. Minimum of two years professional work experience in an archive or special collections department. A second master's degree in American history is highly desirable in applicants with the MLS.

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES PREFERRED:
High energy and interpersonal skills to handle a variety of reference inquiries is desirable. Excellent oral and written communications skills, as well as conceptual skills essential to outreach program.

Description: This two-year residency offers recent MLS graduates a breadth of professional experience in a technology-rich, academic research library setting. POSITION OVERVIEW
The Branch Library Manager reports to the Assistant Director of Public Services. The position supervises a staff of 20 professionals, clerical and support staff. It oversees the quality of reference, reader’s advisory, information, referral and circulation services to the public and coordinates collection development activity. The neighborhoods in which branches are located consist of many community groups, organizations and schools that are deeply committed to their branch libraries and the branch manager ensures that outreach efforts respond to their interests and needs.

Other activities include: monitoring budgets, providing for collection development and maintenance, and short- and long-range development of Library services in the Library unit. Incumbents: assist in the selection of staff, may schedule, train, supervise and evaluate Librarian and clerical staff, assist in the development of branch or regional goals, develop procedures to implement objectives, facilitate the purchase of needed materials, coordinate various activities with others in the Library, and may perform other duties as assigned. THE BEACON HILL AND INTERNATIONAL DISTRICT/CHINATOWN BRANCHES
Both branches are located in two of the most diverse communities of Seattle in close proximity to the core of the city. The two branches are designated magnet World Language sites and have many bi-lingual staff members. The architecturally striking 10,400 square foot Beacon Hill branch serves a largely single-family residential neighborhood, with increasing densification occurring. Its central location and easy access attracts many users to its meeting room for assorted community activities and library programs for all ages, to the general collection of 40,000 items, to an array of PC stations with Internet connections, and to its emphasis services of ESL and World Language interests. The International District/Chinatown (IDC) branch is a tenancy, 3800 square foot facility in a mixed-use complex that includes family housing and a community center next door. This neighborhood has a long history as the heart of Seattle’s Asian immigrant community, and includes many small businesses, restaurants, and service agencies drawing clientele from across the metropolitan area. The IDC staff is engaged in continuous outreach and partnership activities and offers programs for all ages. ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Public services and collection management: Develop, deliver and continually evaluate and improve services. Coordinate branch services with The Seattle Public Library’s system wide priorities and resources. Participate in and coordinate branch collection development and maintenance with the Technical and Collection Services staff, and ensure that the Library’s standards and procedures are fully implemented. Provide reference and other public services at service desks.

Staff supervision: Develop and guide staff toward the highest standards of customer service. Supervise staff and evaluate performance. Develop challenging work assignments and oversee the accomplishment of work plans. Oversee the selection, training, performance appraisal and recognition, discipline, and professional development of branch staff. Administer the labor agreement and human resources policies and procedures.

Community outreach: Maintain effective working partnerships with schools, community groups, neighborhood planning groups, civic agencies, and library user groups. Identify emerging needs for new library services and set goals and priorities accordingly. Represent the Library to the neighbor-hood and to community groups and individuals.

Branch operations: Oversee building and property management functions and coordinate branch operations with other departments and divisions including Facilities, Security, Information Technology, the Business Office, and Public Services administration

Hardin Library for the Health Sciences: The Hardin Library for the Health Sciences serves the combined information and research needs of the Colleges of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics (including related allied-health education programs), and the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology. The mission of the Hardin Library is to disseminate health sciences information to the students, faculty and staff of the University of Iowa in support of education, research, and health care, and to preserve the scholarly record for the future. The Electronic Collections Department
The Head of Electronic Collections will lead and be an active member of a growing Electronic Collections Department, communicating regularly with library staff at many levels and in many departments. As appropriate, this department leads, coordinates and/or supports the system wide collecting and conversion of electronic and digital collections through the Yale University Library. The YUL is actively acquiring online resources including journals, databases, online books, and other online resources, and is exploring archiving electronic content, and collaborating in converting traditional formats to digital formats. The collections funds spent on electronic resources have increased by more than 30% a year; the current number of full-text serial titles is over 63,000; the number of databases exceeds 1,100; and the number of online books is over 800,000. Expansive growth of e-resources continues. Electronic Collections staff work together as a team to provide appropriate services to a large library system as appropriate, in centralized and decentralized aspects.

General Purpose
The Director of Electronic Collections provides vision, managerial leadership and knowledge in support of collections development for e-resources. Working closely with subject specialists and a broad range of other library staff, users, and suppliers, this position leads a dynamic team and provides policy and other significant guidance to the entire Library system with a complex array of needs and service patterns.

Serves as a resource for public, technical and/or administrative services. Plans, organizes, communicates, and administers the programs of service to users and potential users of the Library’s materials and services. Administers programs covering a range of library operations. Administers, supervises and plans for operations of a department. Defines priorities for use of library resources and/or performance of library functions. Contributes to long range departmental and library planning. Evaluates departmental and library program effectiveness. Develops new services, procedures, standards and/or policies

Responsibilities
This position facilitates access to collections and services of a complex, multi-faceted research/academic library through direct contact with library patrons and/or through the development of collections and their bibliographic identification. Contributes to improvements in the efficiency and effectiveness of the scholarly collections system. Develops, implements, and/or administers department/library policy and procedures which provides access to the Yale University Library collections and which allows for the cooperative exchange of resources between Yale and other Universities and information networks. Participates in and contributes to library long-term planning and is professionally active in library, scholarly and/or academic organizations. Represents the library and the University in the academic and professional community by serving on various committees and task forces.

This position reports to the AUL for Collections and International Programs and is responsible for overall management of the activities of Electronic Collections Department (including international e-collections), with a total of 9.5 FTE plus student support.

The position includes:

I. Oversight of budget and space issues; backup and final authority role for all departmental activities; staff issues such as training, department orientations, intern hosting, short and long term library fellows; and identifying opportunities for grants, as appropriate.

II. Serving as Selector Coordinator/Fund Manager for library e-resources that cross more than two libraries or subject areas, including responsibility for: the CERF (Central Electronic Resources Fund) budget of approximately $900,000; management of system wide e-resource selection decision-making; leadership of CoDGer, the E-Collections policy making group across YUL; coordinating Yale participation in NERL (NorthEast Research Libraries Consortium); and oversight of the CoDGeR Web site and E-Coll policies Web site.

III. Management of policy making and communications for selection and handling of shared and cross-disciplinary e-resources, including: leading exploration of overarching issues in the selection and care of e-resources; developing and/or managing development of best practices for e-collecting; communicating across YUL about e-resources broad issues; and funneling renewal information on shared resources to relevant stakeholders as appropriate and ensuring appropriate action

IV. Leading the license review, negotiating, and compliance processes, which may be done by E-Collections staff and/or a broader team, for example: coordinating authentication and authorization issues for e-resources; communicating as appropriate with vendors, selectors, AUL, and others; coordinating investigation and responses to license breach reports, in consultation with ITS and AUL; and participating as appropriate in e-resource trouble shooting activities.

V. ERM (Electronic Resources Management system, Verde software) "parent," with ultimate authority for this new activity, which is delegated to others and/or coordinated across the YUL system.

VI. International E-Programs, where the Head may exercise a YUL leadership or representation role in a trio of UN Access Projects (HINARI, OARE, and AGORA), as well as others, including the grant funded Middle Eastern Project (primarily AMEEL). Duties may include coordinating Library participation in OARE (Online Access to Research in the Environment); managing YUL contribution to content and other aspects of international projects; supporting database management and maintenance of the WHO's HINARI; participation as a team leader for US Department of Education Title VI projects.

Qualifications
Graduate degree in Library and/or Information Science from an ALA accredited program or its equivalent in experience and related education and five years of professional experience and accomplishment.

For appointment to LIV requires eight years of professional experience and accomplishments; appointment to LV requires twelve years of professional experience and accomplishment.

With a staff of 32 full time employees and a large number of student workers, these units encompass circulation, stacks maintenance, security/safety services, interlibrary loan, document delivery services (Books By Mail, Request Delivery, and Request Article Delivery), electronic reserves, and off-site storage, processing and delivery.

RESPONSIBILITIES:Reporting to the Associate Dean for Public Services, the Head, Customer and Access Services provides leadership for the IUB Libraries in the development and implementation of personalized, customer-focused services for the physical/digital delivery of print, image, and other resources to meet the evolving needs of a new generation of library users. The incumbent will provide strategic and effective management of the four units of the Customer and Access Services Department to continually seek innovative ways to deliver information; work with members of Public Services and Library Information Technologies to embed services into the Libraries’ web site and integrated library system; and work with the Associate Dean for Collection Development and Digital Publishing to explore delivery options as part of a collection development strategy, support the Libraries’ digitization efforts and set priorities for the relocation of collections to off-site storage. MISCELLANEOUS NON-MANAGEMENT EMPLOYEES (SMEA)

SALARY STEPS: Appointments are normally made at the first step. Consideration is given for increase to the second step after successful completion of a six-month probationary period. (Employees appointed at a higher step will be eligible for consideration for the next step after one year, providing they successfully complete a six-month probationary period.)

PRE-PLACEMENT PHYSICAL EXAM & DRUG AND ALCOHOL TESTING POLICY: Candidates offered employment must pass a pre-placement medical exam, which includes a drug and alcohol-screening test, prior to final appointment. Hiring decisions may be based upon results of pre-placement medical exam and drug and alcohol screening. Positive samples are retained for 90 days from date of notification. Applicants with a positive result must notify the City, in writing, prior to the expiration of the 90 days to request retention beyond the 90 day period. BENEFITS

BIENNIAL PHYSICAL: City-paid Biennial Physical exam every 24 months. Employees 40 & over eligible every 18 months.

ANNUAL LEAVE: Accrued at a rate of 22 days through 5 years; 27 days through 10 years; with additional longevity increases.

HOLIDAYS:Thirteen days per year.

FLEXIBLE COMPENSATION BENEFIT: A Flexible Benefit equal to 5% of the employee's annual base salary may be used toward employee health contribution, supplemental life insurance, deferred compensation leave time or cash.

HEALTH INSURANCE:The City pays 100% for CalPERS Choice Health plan, Delta Dental and medical Eye Services for employee and eligible dependents. Other PERS Health coverage may be available depending upon your residence. The City will only provide the premium amount equal to the CalPERS Choice.

RETIREMENT:Public Employees Retirement System 2% at 55. Employee pays 7% contribution in addition to Social Security/Medicare contributions.

LONG-TERM DISABILITY:Private long-term disability plan for job related and non-job related disability.

LIFE INSURANCE:City-paid life insurance policy of $50,000.

UNIFORM ALLOWANCE:Work clothing or clothing allowance or footwear allowance provided for employees required to wear a uniform; or in certain classifications.

DEFERRED COMPENSATION: Employee may elect to enroll in a plan.

BILINGUAL PAY: 5% of base salary for employees holding designated positions and who qualify through testing procedures.

DIFFERENTIAL PAY:Split shift differential for Library Employees - 5% for days on which the employee's shift is split.

PREMIUM PAY:Classifications that require certification may be eligible for up to 5% additional pay for certifications held not required for the job.

PHYSICAL FITNESS/WELLNESS PROGRAM: City will provide 50% reimbursement to employees for actual costs of participation in health club memberships for employee only, not exceed $500 per calendar year, per employee or an annual fitness incentive of $500/$750/$1000 for qualifying employees.

Position Definition
Reporting to the Dean of Instruction, the Director of Library Services is responsible for managing all Library programs and services to meet the information requirements of the students and staff of Monterey Peninsula College. The Director of Library Services
