Father Gabriel Ruiz C.M.F.

Phone interview with Father Gabriel Ruiz C.M.F. on Sunday, September 17, 1995.

After asking what a quinceañera is and if there is any mention about it in the Catholic Bible, Father Ruiz stated that a person is first presented to the church as a newborn in the act of babtism. Then one is presented to the church to confirm the religious beliefs such as in the First Holy Communion. It is a privelage to be alive and it is splendid and hoped for a person to give thanks to God for being who one is and celebrating. "God calls us to this life to do something good." Part of this falls into a girl who turns 15 years old to give thanks to God and celebrate her happiness with family and friends. The girl's family choose what is to be read for the quinceañera and as tradition calls, there is a great fiesta after the religous ceremony of giving thanks to God. "It is also known from oral history that the ancient Mexican civilizations had this custom. The young Mayans and Aztecs would go through a religous ceremony of thanks to their Gods. This was a passage into adulthood. The girl was to contribute to its community that took care of her for some time. She would then begin her passage into womanhood. Today, some girls go to extravagant measures to have the most beautiful dresses and parties, yet the importance is in the girl's moral principles. She is to live a wholesome lifestyle of devotion, faith, and to do good to others."
