Founding and Mission
The Arizona Board of Regents approved the establishment of the Hispanic
Research Center (HRC) at Arizona State University on March 1, 1985. As an
interdisciplinary research unit reporting to the Dean of the College of Liberal
Arts and Sciences, the HRC was disigned as a university wide center whose main
purpose is:
- To conduct basic and applied research on a broad range of topics related to
Hispanic populations, particularly Mexican Americans
- To disseminate research findings to the academic community and the public
- To provide public service in areas of importance to Hispanics
Research Foci
Four main research foci have been identified fot the HRC. These are:
- Hispanic entrepreneurship
- Science and technology
- The Hispanic polity
- The arts
These foci were selected because of their centrality to the Hispanic Community
and the relative lack of emphasis that these subjects have received in the
past. The HRC also was designed to complement the main interests and strengths
of similar centers already operating at other institutions. Qualified
researchers are encouraged to colaborate with the HRC to develop specific lines
of inquiry under these four general areas.
Activities of the HRC
Besides undertaking a wide variety of research projects, the HRC engages in
several key ongoing activities that are central to the distinctiveness of the
HRC. These activities are at various stages of development.
They include:
- The Bilingual Review/Press. Under the general editorship of Dr. Gary
Keller, this HRC publications program enjoys a national and international
readership.
- The Electronic Publications Program. The HRC has undertaken a very ambitious
effort to achieve and disseminate the results of significant research and
creative effort related to Hispanics. Using the latest computer technology,
the HRC publishes creative works, research reports, and the proceedings of
conferences and symposia. These publications are distributed to researchers
and the general public on inexpensive floppy disks at a modest fee. Researchers
and creative writers are encouraged to submit their original works to the HRC
for archiving and dissemination.
- Hispanic Data Archives. The HRC welcomes contributions by researchers of
original data sets relating to Hispanics. The HRC will archive these data sets
and make them available to qualified researchers affiliated with the Center.
Both quantitative and qualitative data sets are welcomed. Original data sets
are permanently identified with the contributors.
- Hispanic Research and Arts Network. It is a goal of the HRC to serve as a
resource to the Hispanic research community. Individuals wishing to affiliate
with the HRC may do so through the Hispanic Research and Arts Network (HRAN).
Applicants to the HRAN should be qualified researchers who are willing to
contribute to the HRC either an original research report or an original data
set collected by the applicant. Membership in the HRAN is awarded on
recommendation of a screening committee. Members of the HRAN become a part of
the larger HRC network and gain access to the information flow of the
center.
- HRC Electronic Bulletin Board. The HRC will operate an electronic bulletin
board to faciliate communication between the center and its affiliates.
Through the bulletin board, reserachers will be able to maintain a direct link
to the HRC and other researchers using the bulletin board's message system.
Members of the Hispanic Research and Arts Network will have access to the
bulletin board. Use of the bulletin board will entail a modest fee.
