Curriculum.

Given present recruitment profiles and the demographic changes taking place in the state, all librarians graduating from library schools within California should be prepared to serve the Latino community. There are two approaches which have been identified for carrying this out. The first is the integration of Latino resources, libraries, databases, services into the core curriculum of the schools. One drawback to this approach is that while in principle faculty agree to incorporate these resources into the curriculum, many times they may not find space in their syllabi for additional material. REFORMA can assist in this effort by identifying a core list of Latino reference works which faculty could consider for integration into their courses. Another approach is requiring library students to take a course which specifically addresses the issues of Latinos. Continuing education/in-service training should also be offered and taught by Latino librarians and educators. A summer seminar for practicing librarians which would address Latino concerns has been discussed as a feasible activity with the library school at UCLA.
