There is a need for an affirmative action policy statement for the libraries within the UC system that would encourage the recruitment of Latino librarians at all levels, and especially at senior or decision/policy making positions. A mechanism for the identification and grooming of Latinos to assume responsible positions which are not exclusively devoted to serving minority interests should be implemented. Such a program is being proposed to the State Library by UCLA's Graduate School of Library and Information Science. State and national groups such as the Chicano Information Management Consortium and REFORMA and SALALM (Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials) should be used as resources to identify Latino professionals.
