Thus far we have discussed some of the prospects for developing a more integrated in-formation base. A vital part of this effort would be the formal establishment of a planning and implementation mechanism. In 1981 the Chicano Information Management Consortium of California (CIMCC) was founded in order to serve as a planning/coordinating forum to enhance the effectiveness of existing academic Chicano information retrieval efforts. Working in a voluntary and cooperative mode, the general objectives of the CIMCC are to:

Strengthen existing resources, services, and research through the coordinated development of member programs. Areas of cooperation may include, but will not be limited to: cooperative acquisitions programs, shared cataloging, expanded inter-library loan arrangements, and cooperative reference services.

Improving bibliographic access to Chicano Studies literature through the development of access tools such as an on-line or a printed union list of holdings for member libraries,

Devising and implementing new strategies for meeting the informational needs of California's population about Chicanos.

This organization has heretofore existed without any resources. The CIMCC should be expanded and identified as the official planning group for the statewide development of Latino resources in the UC System and given appropriate resources to assist in the development of all of these vital efforts. Additionally it should be represented in those university efforts which require Latino information sources.
