Research Opportunities.

The massive population changes in California and other Southwestern states presents an unlimited number of opportunities for research and library related investigations. The study of information for decision making in Latino communities, its quality, source, and manipulation is almost untouched. The intellectual access process used by Latinos to reach pertinent data and information presents numerous research possibilities that involve the organization of knowledge, the sociology of knowledge, indexing, thematic association and bilingual factors that complicate access to information structured along traditional lines. A general profile of Latino library professionals is needed. Such a study could explore where Latino librarians are employed, how they are proceeding up the managerial ladder, their reasons for entering the library profession, and their role in developing services for minorities. Collaborative work with the Chicano Studies research centers which focuses on demographic and cultural change within Latino communities should be explored by both library schools' faculty and graduate students. This is consistent with the State Library's request that their scholarship recipients carry out research in minority communities.
