Recommendations:

1. The University must expand the diversity of its curriculum, in a State and at a time when many are challenged by life in an increasingly diverse society. Traditional emphases on Western European intellectual tradition must be replaced by broader curricula which focus also upon the many different intellectual traditions from which the population of California springs.

2. Ethnic, Latin American, and other area studies programs are essential to such a diverse curriculum, and these instructional programs should be strengthened and integrated into the breadth requirements of each degree program for every student.

3. Curricula in Schools of Education and Teacher Education programs should be expanded to increase their relevance to today's primary and secondary school population.

4. The definition of "teaching" should be expanded to include faculty mentoring and advising activities. These should be evaluated, and excellent performance rewarded, in faculty merit and promotion decisions.
